Founded in 1989, we have grown from a small group of friends to a happy ‘family’ of some 30 people of 14 nationalities and with ages ranging from 15 to over 80.

Our directors gently coax us to refine our pitch, watch our dynamics and improve the general musical quality of our performances – but never forget that we need to have fun too. We sing a wide range of music from classical through folk to gospel and jazz.

At present, rehearsals are held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings in Andorra la Vella. They are conducted in a free-ranging mixture of English and Catalan and so offer a great opportunity to learn both languages.

We remember each other’s birthdays and hold joint parties several times a year.

We eagerly welcome anyone who can sing in tune and enjoys doing so. Right now, we are particularly keen to find more tenors and basses - and sopranos who can hit the top notes.

If you’d just like to drop by and see what we get up to,

please ring me, Clare, on 344 181.  I look forward to meeting you.

THE INTERNATIONAL SINGERS 2008 Report

The Singers have had yet another roller coaster year. On the positive side we’ve sung for the Day of the Sick, the Wedding anniversaries at Meritxell and with other choirs at the Auditorium in Ordino. We held our annual At Home in the comu theatre of Escaldes and, for the first time, gave a concert in the new theatre of La Massana. We would like to thank both comuns for allowing us to use their theatres free of charge and the Club for providing drinks for the At Home and also refreshments for the Ordino Christmas Concert.

That concert saw one of the more dramatic ‘dips’ in the running of the choir. On the Thursday before it, our co-director, Luc Sanchez emailed me that he felt too unwell to play so, with a couple of days to spare, Robert Bailey, a brilliant new young member of the choir, stepped in and, with just one rehearsal, played for us. In all, our Christmas concerts raised about 800€ for charity.

On January 20th this year we celebrated the Singers’ 20th anniversary with a party bursting with song at which we thanked our co-directors/pianists Marc Pià and Luc-Olivier Sanchez as well as our organizers Meritxell Farrero and Clare Allcard and treasurer Maria Rosa Garrallà for all their hard work. We also raised a glass to those founder members present: Brenda Ross, Jean Axten, Jeanne Lodge, Hans Kiaer and Clare Allcard.

Partly in honour of our anniversary, but more in acknowledgement of the tastes of our new young members - we now have four under 24 - we plan to do some fundraising to pay for new uniform tops. However, as you might imagine, getting twenty-five women to agree on what the tops should look like is no easy task.

The choir is now the largest I think it has ever been. Since January we have welcomed singers from Nigeria, Peru, the Philippines, America and Germany who range in age from 15 to 60+. Sadly not one of them is a man. Please, we really do need more men if we are to produce a full, rich, choir sound.

At the end of January a large group of us went to the Ordino Auditorium to hear Marc Pià give a classical recital and then, in February, nine of us went to Barcelona to watch Luc in a brilliant two man show at the Capitol Theatre on the Rambles.

With Luc treading the boards in Barcelona, we feel extremely lucky to have the experienced musical director, Frona Avery, rehearsing us for Luc’s part of our summer season when we will probably give three concerts including our annual At Home with the Singers. For the first time we plan to do part of the show in costume whilst singing a medley from the musical Les Miserables.

This coming Friday week, 27th March at 9pm at St Esteve Church, we expect to sing in a charity concert with the Petits Cantors, Catherine Metayer’s adult choir, and the choir of Escaldes-Engordany. The money raised will go to an agricultural project in Madagascar to grow spiruline, a protein algae that helps children with nutritional deficiencies. Do hope you will come and support the good cause. Thank you.

Regards Clare
